Australia is one of the largest sources of international money transfers in the Asia-Pacific region. With more than 7 million residents born overseas and a large diaspora working and studying abroad, the demand for reliable, affordable cross-border payments is substantial. Migrant workers sending remittances home, expats managing payments abroad, and businesses paying overseas suppliers all face the same challenge: getting money from Australia to Trinidad & Tobago without losing an excessive amount to fees and exchange rate markups.
The traditional solution has been to use a bank. CommBank, ANZ, Westpac, and NAB all offer international wire transfers, but they are consistently among the most expensive options available. Australian banks typically charge a flat fee of AUD 20 to AUD 32 per transfer plus a foreign exchange margin of 2% to 4% on the mid-market rate. On a AUD 2,000 transfer, that combination can cost AUD 80 to AUD 100, compared to AUD 10 to AUD 25 with a specialist provider.
Specialist providers like Wise, Xe, and Remitly use the mid-market exchange rate or come close to it, show fees transparently upfront, and process transfers faster than the SWIFT network. This guide compares the leading options, explains what Australian banks actually charge, and gives you a clear framework for finding the cheapest and fastest way to send money from Australia to Trinidad & Tobago.

Best way to send money from Australia to Trinidad & Tobago
For most transfers from Australia, the best option is a specialist online provider rather than a bank. The core reason is the exchange rate. Australian banks apply a margin of 2% to 4% above the mid-market rate, which is not shown as a fee. On a AUD 3,000 transfer, a 3% margin costs AUD 90 before the flat wire fee is added. Specialist providers use the mid-market rate or apply a much smaller margin, and they show the total cost upfront before you commit.
Speed is the secondary consideration. Wise and Remitly deliver within one to two business days on most corridors, often same-day when funded via PayID. Xe offers same-day delivery on major routes as standard. Australian bank SWIFT transfers take two to five business days and can be longer when intermediary banks are involved.
Wise is the benchmark for international money transfers from Australia. It uses the real mid-market exchange rate with no markup, charging instead a transparent fee of 0.4% to 1.5% depending on the currency pair and payment method. Wise is regulated by ASIC in Australia, holds an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL), and safeguards customer funds in segregated accounts.
Sending from Australia with Wise is quick via PayID or OSKO, which clears within seconds and triggers same-day processing on most major routes. The Wise mobile app and website both support transfers to over 40 currencies. For Australians who send money regularly, Wise is consistently the best value option on bank-to-bank transfers.
Xe supports over 130 currencies, making it the best option for Australians sending to less common destinations. Processing times are consistently fast: most transfers from Australia arrive within 24 hours, and same-day delivery is available on major corridors. Xe charges no flat fee and instead applies a small margin to the exchange rate, which is competitive on high-volume pairs like AUD/USD and AUD/EUR.
Xe is authorised by ASIC in Australia and operates with full regulatory compliance in all major markets. Phone and live chat support is available. For Australian senders who need speed or need to reach a destination outside the main corridors, Xe is a reliable and cost-effective choice.
Remitly (Best for Remittances to Asia, Africa and Latin America)
Remitly is purpose-built for remittance, designed for sending money from higher-income countries to developing markets. From Australia, it is a strong choice for transfers to the Philippines, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Nigeria, Ghana, and Mexico. The platform supports bank deposit, mobile wallet, and cash pickup payout methods.
Remitly's Economy tier delivers within three to five business days at the lowest cost, while Express arrives within hours for a slightly higher fee. A Delivery Guarantee refunds the fee if funds do not arrive on time. Remitly is regulated by ASIC and holds licences in over 50 countries.
CurrencyFair (Best for Larger Transfers)
CurrencyFair uses a peer-to-peer marketplace model that matches buyers and sellers of currency, eliminating much of the bank margin. For Australian senders moving larger amounts, this delivers competitive exchange rates on commonly traded pairs like AUD/EUR and AUD/GBP, typically within 0.3% to 0.5% of mid-market.
CurrencyFair works best for non-urgent transfers on widely traded currency pairs where the marketplace has sufficient liquidity. It is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland and complies with Australian financial services regulations. Particularly popular with Australian expats in Europe converting AUD to EUR or GBP.
Western Union (Best for Cash Pickup Worldwide)
Western Union operates one of the world's largest money transfer networks, covering over 200 countries and more than 500,000 agent locations. For Australian senders whose recipients do not have a bank account or need to collect cash urgently, Western Union's network is unmatched. Recipients can collect at post offices, convenience stores, and bank branches across Trinidad & Tobago.
The trade-off is cost. Western Union charges higher fees and a larger exchange rate margin than specialist providers. Its value is in network reach and cash pickup capability rather than price. Transfers can be initiated online, via the app, or at Australia Post locations. Western Union is regulated by AUSTRAC in Australia.
Traditional Australian banks (usually not recommended)
CommBank, ANZ, Westpac, and NAB all offer international wire transfer services, and many Australians default to them out of familiarity. But that familiarity has a significant financial cost. Australian banks are consistently among the most expensive options for international transfers, combining high flat fees with hidden exchange rate markups.
High fees
Australian banks charge a flat fee per international wire regardless of the amount. CommBank charges AUD 22 per transfer. ANZ charges AUD 9 online but up to AUD 30 at a branch. Westpac charges AUD 22 online and AUD 30 via phone or branch. NAB charges AUD 22 for online international transfers. These fees are disproportionately expensive for smaller amounts: a AUD 22 fee on a AUD 500 transfer is a 4.4% overhead before any exchange rate margin is counted.
CommBank: AUD 22 flat fee
ANZ: AUD 9 online, AUD 30 in branch
Westpac: AUD 22 online, AUD 30 phone/branch
NAB: AUD 22 online international transfers
Bad exchange rates
The bigger cost is the exchange rate margin, built into the rate the bank applies and never shown as a separate fee. Australian banks typically add 2% to 4% above the mid-market rate. On a AUD 5,000 transfer, a 3% margin is AUD 150, invisible because it is embedded in the rate rather than charged as a line item. Combined with the flat wire fee, a major Australian bank can cost AUD 170 to AUD 210 on a AUD 5,000 transfer, versus AUD 25 to AUD 60 with a specialist provider.
Slow transfer times
Bank international transfers travel over the SWIFT network, which takes two to five business days on average and sometimes longer when correspondent banks are involved. Each intermediary bank can also deduct a processing fee from the transferred amount. Specialist providers use local payment networks on both ends and typically deliver in one to two business days, often same-day when funded via PayID.
Bank vs specialist: real cost comparison
For a AUD 2,000 transfer, a major Australian bank costs AUD 70 to AUD 100 (flat fee plus FX margin). Wise typically costs AUD 12 to AUD 25. Remitly varies by corridor but is typically AUD 5 to AUD 20. Over time, switching to a specialist provider saves hundreds of dollars per year for regular senders.
Major Australian bank (AUD 2,000): AUD 70 to AUD 100 total cost
Wise (AUD 2,000): AUD 12 to AUD 25 total cost
Xe (AUD 2,000): AUD 20 to AUD 40 total cost
Remitly (AUD 2,000): AUD 5 to AUD 20 depending on corridor
Cash pickup from Australia: when it makes sense
Cash pickup is the right option when the recipient in Trinidad & Tobago does not have a bank account or needs to access physical local currency urgently. Western Union and Remitly both support cash pickup on a wide range of corridors from Australia. The recipient collects funds at a local agent location using a transaction reference number and valid photo ID.
How cash pickup works step by step
The process is the same with most providers: initiate online, the recipient collects in person with a reference number and ID.
Initiate the transfer online or in the app, selecting cash pickup as the delivery method
Enter the recipient's full name exactly as on their government-issued ID
Pay and receive a transaction reference number (MTCN or PIN)
Share the reference number with the recipient
Recipient presents the number and valid photo ID at any agent location
Funds paid out in local currency at the prevailing agent exchange rate
Cash pickup is not always the cheapest
Cash pickup is more expensive than bank deposit. Providers charge higher fees to cover agent network costs, and the exchange rate at pickup locations often includes an additional margin. If the recipient has a bank account, bank deposit is almost always cheaper and faster.
How to find the best way to send money from Australia to Trinidad & Tobago
The right provider depends on how much you are sending, how fast the recipient needs it, what payment method you use in Australia, and how the recipient can access the funds. Use the following criteria to consistently make the best decision for your specific transfer.
Start with total cost, not zero-fee claims
Many providers advertise zero fees or no transfer fee. This is almost always misleading: the fee is embedded in the exchange rate margin instead. The only accurate comparison is the amount the recipient receives in TTD. Use each provider's calculator to enter the exact AUD amount and compare the received amount before confirming.
Choose the right payout method for your recipient
The payout method affects which provider is right for you. If the recipient has a bank account in Trinidad & Tobago, bank deposit is cheapest and fastest. Mobile wallet delivery is low-cost and fast in supported corridors. Cash pickup is available everywhere but costs more. Always confirm what the recipient can access before choosing a provider.
Speed versus maximum value
If the transfer is not urgent, standard or economy tier transfers are almost always the cheapest. If the recipient needs funds today, Xe or Remitly Express offer fast options at a slightly higher fee. For recurring transfers, optimise for long-term cost since even a 0.5% improvement in the exchange rate saves meaningfully over months.
Your payment method in Australia affects price and timing
How you fund the transfer in Australia changes both cost and processing speed. PayID or OSKO bank transfer is the cheapest and fastest method with Wise, clearing in seconds at no extra charge. BPAY is reliable but slightly slower. Debit card is fast but some providers charge an additional fee. Credit card funding is typically the most expensive and may be treated as a cash advance by your bank.
PayID/OSKO: fastest and cheapest with most providers
BPAY: reliable, slightly slower, no extra fee
Debit card: fast, small surcharge with some providers
Credit card: fastest but most expensive, may trigger cash advance fee
Match the provider to your transfer type
Each provider has a different strength. Use the right tool for your specific need.
Best rate on bank-to-bank: Wise
Speed or exotic currency: Xe
Remittance to Asia or Africa: Remitly
Large non-urgent transfer: CurrencyFair
Recipient needs cash pickup: Western Union
Always compare the amount received in TTD
Exchange rates change throughout the day. Always run the comparison fresh on the day you intend to transfer, using the exact AUD amount you plan to send. Look only at the bottom line: how much TTD does the recipient receive? Switching from a major Australian bank to Wise on a AUD 2,000 monthly transfer saves AUD 600 to AUD 900 per year.
FAQs: Sending money from Australia to Trinidad & Tobago
What is the cheapest way to send money from Australia internationally?
The cheapest method is using a specialist provider like Wise or Remitly rather than an Australian bank. Wise uses the mid-market rate with a fee of 0.4% to 1.5%, while major banks (CommBank, ANZ, Westpac, NAB) charge AUD 22 flat plus a 2% to 4% FX margin. On a AUD 2,000 transfer, Wise typically costs AUD 12 to AUD 25 versus AUD 70 to AUD 100 at a bank.
How long does an international transfer from Australia take?
Specialist providers like Wise and Remitly typically deliver within one to two business days, often same-day via PayID. Xe frequently offers same-day delivery on major corridors. Australian bank SWIFT transfers take two to five business days, sometimes longer with intermediary banks.
Is it safe to use an online money transfer service in Australia?
Yes. All major providers are regulated by ASIC and registered with AUSTRAC. Wise, Xe, and Remitly hold Australian Financial Services Licences (AFSL) and safeguard customer funds in segregated accounts, protected separately from the company's own capital.
Can I send money from Australia to a recipient without a bank account?
Yes. Western Union and Remitly both offer cash pickup to a wide range of countries. The recipient collects funds in local currency at a designated agent location using a reference number and government-issued ID. Remitly also supports mobile wallet delivery to GCash, M-Pesa, and bKash in supported corridors.
What is the difference between the transfer fee and the exchange rate margin?
The transfer fee is the explicit charge shown upfront, typically a flat amount or percentage. The exchange rate margin is a hidden cost built into the rate: the provider quotes a rate worse than mid-market and keeps the difference. Banks rarely show the margin separately. Wise uses the mid-market rate and shows fees explicitly, making total cost transparent.
Can I send money from Australia using PayID?
Yes. Wise supports PayID as a funding method and it is the fastest and cheapest way to fund a transfer from Australia. PayID clears within seconds, triggering same-day processing on most major routes.
What happens if my transfer does not arrive?
Contact the provider's support with your transaction reference number immediately. Remitly offers a Delivery Guarantee and refunds the fee if the transfer does not arrive on time. Wise provides a tracking dashboard so you can see transfer status in real time.
Is Wise available in Australia?
Yes. Wise is fully available to Australian residents and holds AFSL 513764. You can send from Australia via the Wise website or mobile app, funding via PayID, BPAY, or card. Wise covers 40+ currencies from Australia including AUD to USD, EUR, GBP, INR, PHP, and more.
Whether you are sending money to Trinidad & Tobago for the first time or looking to reduce the cost of regular transfers, the key principle is the same: use a specialist provider, compare the amount received in TTD, and match the provider to what your recipient actually needs. The savings compared to a major Australian bank are real, consistent, and available every time you send.
